PLANT & GPS

Modern machines. Millimetre discipline.

Rhodes runs a modern Hitachi fleet with 3D GPS machine control on every digger, backed by the trucks, skid steers and transporter that keep material and machines moving. This page is the gear, and the technology that makes it accurate.

THE TECHNOLOGY

The plan rides in the cab.

On a Rhodes job, the site plan is loaded straight into the digger. The operator sees the whole site on the in-cab screen with exact level and depth, live, and can work offsets and undercuts without waiting on a laser or a string line. Nobody stands in the work zone spot-checking levels, which is faster, and safer for the crew.

GPS is mandatory on every Rhodes job. Owning the technology is the easy part; the value comes from operators who use it hard, knowing the offsets, the shortcuts and everything behind the screen that turns accuracy into speed.

  • No over-dig. On work priced by cubic volume, accuracy is a direct saving to the client.

  • Photo proof. The operator photographs the GPS screen at level, so every engineer inspection starts with evidence.

  • Fewer people near machines. Levels checked from the cab means labourers aren't standing in the dig zone.

THE FLEET

Hitachi, 1.7 to 21 tonne.

We're a Hitachi fleet partner, and every digger we run is Hitachi, ranging from a 1.7 tonne machine for tight access up to our 21 tonne excavators for bulk work. All of them carry GPS machine control, and we keep the fleet late-model and well serviced, with attachments to suit the job.

The detail machines.

Two skid steers, a Bobcat and a Kubota, handle tight sites, spreading and detail work, alongside a GPS grader for shaping and final trim.

Four truck-and-trailer units and a Kenworth.

Cartage runs on four modern Hino truck-and-trailer units, keeping aggregate coming in and spoil going out on the job's programme. Machine moves happen on our Kenworth transporter, which shifts our own gear between sites and handles equipment transport for clients as well

WHY WE BUY GOOD GEAR

We invest early, because downtime is dearer.

Rhodes invests hard in machinery and technology, and we maintain the fleet in our own workshop, scheduling the big jobs for wet weeks so the gear works when the sites do. We backed GPS before it was common because we think it's simply where the industry is heading, and being early has given our clients years of the advantage.
